Develop a plan to reduce or eliminate your credit card debt

On Behalf of Goldman, Monaghan, Thakkar & Bettin, P.A. | Dec 5, 2017 | blog

Using credit cards to make payments on many things is a way of life in this country. There are many times in which this isn’t going to cause a problem. You know that a credit card is a good option since it does offer some protections. You might even be responsible with what you charge, but sometimes there is trouble looming.

It is possible to charge more than what you realize you did. This can lead to your having more debt than what you are comfortable with. Paying down the balances or doing away with credit card debt altogether might be a goal you set for yourself. Here are some tips to help you:

Determine your repayment strategy

You can’t try to pay down credit card debt by continuing to make the minimum payments each month. Instead, you need actionable plans to pay down these balances. First, you have to determine what you can afford to spend. Once you know this, plan on keeping the minimum payments each month on all your accounts except the one that you are paying the most interest on. You should put any extra funds toward paying that account down.

Facing the difficult times

There might be times when you simply can’t make the payments. You can reach out to the lender to determine if you can get a break on the interest rate or the payment. There is a chance that you might get a better result if you have an attorney handle this negotiation for you since they know what to call into question here. One option that you might have is settlement, which could allow you to pay off a fraction of what you actually owe. Just remember that forgiven debts must be reported on your income tax forms.

Think about the long term

You need to take the time to think about how charging something now will impact you in the future. Figure out what the interest payments are going to be on the accounts you have if you charge something else. This might spur you to pay off the items you charge as quickly as possible so that you aren’t spending a small fortune on interest charges.

When you are in credit card debt, you might dread opening the statements or making the payments. Just remember that if you don’t do something about the debts, there is a chance that you will end up heading to court over them.
