Former Florida judge charged with DUI

On Behalf of Goldman, Monaghan, Thakkar & Bettin, P.A. | Jul 8, 2020 | Drunk Driving

On June 27, Florida authorities arrested a retired Palm Beach County circuit judge on suspicion of drunk driving after she was involved in a car accident. The incident occurred in Riviera Beach at approximately 11 p.m.

According to local media, the Riviera Beach Police Department received a report of a hit-and-run accident at a home located near Blue Heron Boulevard and Interstate 95 and dispatched officers to the scene. Once the officers arrived, witnesses told them that a white BMW had been involved in a crash and then continued driving south on Avenue O. Soon afterward, officers spotted the vehicle and noticed that it had damage to its front end. They executed a traffic stop and observed that the defendant appeared “disoriented” and unsteady on her feet when she exited the car.

The officers asked the defendant to complete a series of field sobriety tests. She initially agreed, but she eventually said she didn’t believe she could perform them. She was arrested and transported to an area hospital to be checked for crash-related injuries. She was then booked into the Palm Beach County Jail. Once there, she allegedly blew a .168 and a .152 on a breathalyzer, which is around twice the legal limit in Florida. She has been charged with DUI.

Individuals facing drunk driving charges might be able to help their situation by contacting a DUI attorney as soon as possible. The attorney could protect the defendant’s rights and work to develop a solid defense against the accusations. For example, it might be possible to dispute the accuracy of any field sobriety or breathalyzer tests that were performed. Alternatively, it may be possible for the attorney to negotiate a plea deal that reduces the charges, which might lead to a lighter sentence.
